Definition A vector whose elements are stacked vertically is known as a column vector, or simply a vector. Its transpose is called a row vector. λ 1 x 1 + · · · + λ k x k = 0 In other words, they are linearly dependent if at least one of them can be written as a linear combination of the others. Definition A set of vectors are called linearly independent if they are not linearly dependent. are said to be linearly independent if λ 1 x 1 + · · · + λ k x k = 0 implies λ 1 = · · · = λ k = 0. If x 1 , · · · , x k are not linearly independent, we say they are linearly dependent. 1 0 λ 1 x 1 + λ 2 x 2 = 0 implies that λ 1 + λ 2 λ 1 = 0 ⇒ λ 1 = λ 2 = 0.
